Why did I just wake up in pain?
Most patients ask me - “Where did my pain come from? I don’t remember hurting myself.”
In my experience, the majority of my patients fall into an ‘Adaptive’ state category, where their body has put up with so many knocks to the system, it reaches a point where it can’t cope anymore. Just like the saying ‘it was the last straw that broke the camel’s back’, their body has been dealing with poor posture, lack of movement, unhealthy foods and stress for so long that it has finally rose to the surface, in the form of pain.
“I just woke up and now I cant turn my neck”
I find the majority of my patients are so disconnected with their body that they don’t recognise the subtle symptoms that their body sends to them to warn them of dysfunction.
The body acts as a WHOLE and a dysfunction in one area can affect all areas. Hence my tag line ‘Mental, Physical, Chemical.’ If you are under pressure at work, home or school your body will initiate the Fight/Flight system, which is a normal, physiological response to stress. However, this state becomes pathological when the body cant turn it off.
Chronic activation of the Fight/Flight system or as it is known to some “Sympathetic Dominance,” is pathological to the body and brain. It is the opposite of being in a Healing state, whereby it disrupts the normal processes of your body like blood flow to the brain, healing, digestion, normal excretion and reproduction.
Signs of Fight/Flight & Sympathetic Dominance
Joint and muscle Pain including headaches/migraines
Loss of strength
Trouble with focusing and memory
So where does Adaptive state come in?
An adaptive state is when the mind adjusts its processes due to Fight/Flight activation, poor posture, old un-healed injuries, past psychological trauma, unhealthy diet, environmental toxins and so on.
“The mind rewires neuron networks to function in a way that is useful for getting you through today, but can be pathological in the long term.”
Q. So how do you ‘unwind’ out of an adaptive state?
A. You have to face all of these issues head on!
Take the time to contemplate your current stressors:
Not enough exercise / too much exercise
Bad posture and/or heavy lifting at work
Sleep hygiene: hrs per night, unbroken/broken sleep, regular/irregular sleep times
Diet: vegetables, sources of protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates
Lack of meditation/breath work practice
Environmental toxins - proximity to highways, air quality, blue light exposure
Computer/Mobile device use
How can I help?
As a Chiropractor I start with conducting a thorough Health History and Physical Examination to screen for the above stressors. This provides a holistic (whole person) view to the source of a person’s current symptoms. Then use Chiropractic technique including Neural Organisational Technique to realign the spine and return your body to a healing state. Finally we discuss and implement strategies which will supplement the good work we are doing in the practice to accelerate the healing process!
I hope this answers a few of your burning questions. If you would like to discuss this with me please contact me below.
